Project – Cemetery Sign (2008)

So all good cemetery’s need a sign. Well if you recall my original concept, it was going to hang over the entrance way. There will still be small sign over the entrance way, but the big one will be in the center of the yard. This is because it will be seen from the corner, which is good, my parents live on a dead end street and in the past people would make it to the corner before the rents house and not come down to us. So now they will see this sign. I hope to have it up the first week in October so the school buses and other people will see the sign plenty of time before Halloween. Onto the Images…

Here is the design which I created in Adobe Illustrator.

I like the look and if my local stores had all the resources I needed, I would have stayed with it, but as you will see that was not the case.

Now I wanted to use foam, but that didn’t work out, the biggest piece I could find was just a little too small. What I did find that was big enough was actually a cork board, which fit the wood letters perfectly.

So now that I have all the pieces I need to start painting, I want that old white and black metal look. But I didn’t want pure white, it just would be too clean which doesn’t work with rest of the cemetery look. So instead I used primer gray, which has the look I wanted.

Didnt do a complete coverage because I liked the variations. Plus Im going to clear coat it anyways.

Painted the letters with matte black, unfortunately I painted them on cheap plastic garbage bags, some of it came off and stuck to the letters, but its ok cause it adds to the creepy look to it.

Just laying things out to see how they look, Im too impatient with these projects.

I then taped it up and painted the trim in black and did some misting on the board and did some heavier spots to make it look weathered. There are couple dark circles that happen when I sprayed the spray can into my finger by accident and dripped, but it works.

Here it is almost done, sort of but not. They are not glued, and I need to finished off the cross piece that will be in the middle

I need to take a 4 by 4 and cut it in half to make the post. I’m also going to use a solar spot light that will light it up and not worry about a cord going out to the center of the yard and ruin the affect. Once I have it set up I’m going to mess with filters and what not to choose the best color to light the sign.

Here is the finished sign:

Here is the sign finished and up. I put feet on the bottom so we didnt have to dig in to the ground. Which is good cause its located where a tree was, so it would be hard to dig. Also I put a back support (not shown) on it cause the cork board was not strong or stable enough on its own.

In the dark...

There is also a solar spot light that I do not have a picture that lights it up sufficiently.
